"As an artist, musician, songwriter, and composer, the five songs I wrote and composed for the Breakfast in America album are some of the ones I feel most proud of. I put so much passion, care, and love into each one of these songs. I'm so grateful that my songs are still resonating so deeply and are continuing to touch my fans' hearts and souls four generations later. I sincerely love playing these songs live still today. I want to thank all my fans for your appreciation for my composing and songwriting. It's very fulfilling for me to know, as an artist, that I've created music that touches your heart and soul, inspires you, uplifts you, and makes you happy. Your appreciation for my songs inspires me to keep touring and performing them live for you, bringing more love and happiness into your lives. Hope to see you in concert this year." Love, Roger

Roger Hodgson of Supertramp Brings Sold Out Crowd to Their Feet

October 10, 2017 by Kathy Stockbridge

At the age of 12, Roger Hodgson was given a guitar that would mold his destiny of writing and composing music. For anyone who has listened to Roger’s music, you can tell it’s written from the heart as it touches those that hear it in a way that is personal to them. The lyrics are meaningful, melodies well thought out and it’s composed as a classical piece of music is, with thought and organization. As one of the founders of Supertramp, Roger Hodgson would have numerous Top 10 hits, sell out arenas and live a life that most musicians strove to achieve. However, in the height of success, Hodgson chose to leave the group in 1983. The decision would speak volumes and give his fans an insight to his personal character. When faced with a choice of continuing on a trek of selling out arenas or being present in the lives of his wife and children, he chose the latter.

Arriving early to take my seat at the Turning Stone Showroom, I anxiously awaited a moment I never thought I would get to experience: hearing the voice of Supertramp. As a child of the ’70s and ’80s, the band disbanded by the time I was old enough to be able to go to concerts on my own. I was only able to listen to recordings and mentally visualize a show. It was a moment I didn’t think I would have an opportunity to experience, and one I was relishing in as a teenager in an adult’s body.

Roger Hodgson got right into his set, starting the party with “Take the Long Way Home.” Most artists don’t come right out of the gate with such force, especially when they have a two hour set to play. Not to worry though, with a catalog of popular hits both with Supertramp and that of his solo career, the choice of songs to perform was more of the struggle rather than filling the two hours with music the crowd would love.

A successful leader, whether in the corporate world or musical in this case, surrounds himself with the best of the best to bring out the best in themselves. This is the case with Hodgson’s band. He’s surrounded himself with some of the best musicians in the business and their ability to play together is seamless and without effort as they feel the music and perform as a cohesive team. Front and to stage right you’ll find Aaron MacDonald on saxophones, harmonica, keyboards and backing vocals; behind the plexiglass is Bryan Head on drums; behind Roger stage left is Kevin Adamson, also on keyboards and backing vocals; and center stage behind Roger is David J Carpenter on bass and backing vocals. Not to take away from the original band, but to close my eyes and listen to the music I wouldn’t have known it wasn’t the same band as these guys played without effort and with the same passion I heard time and again in the music I grew up with. It was refreshing to see Roger share the stage with these guys and see the respect he gave them as they played their parts along with him. It is apparent that they are a musical family.

Throughout the night Hodgson played many of his hits such as “Breakfast in America,” “The Logical Song,” “Dreamer” and “Give A Little Bit,” to name just a few, demonstrating his fluid keyboards and hitting all the same high notes as he did all those years ago. But it was with his solo music that this multi-faceted artist blew me away. With hits such as “Had a Dream,” he blew me away with his guitar skills, and with “Fools Overture” I saw the musical genius he had as he took three songs that didn’t stand up on their own and melded them together in a musical composition that one must listen to many times to truly appreciate the sound. As I listened to it for the first time last night, I could hear musical influences of the times in the piece such as the sound effects interspersed within, and the story line that took you someplace else. The music itself took you on a roller coaster ride with highs and lows of sound, bringing you back home with meaningful lyrics. I urge you to check his recording out on his Youtube channel as he’s accompanied by an orchestra which truly punctuates the genius in this number.

Another number that truly impressed me and brought me to another place was “Death and a Zoo” from Hodgson’s fourth solo album, Open the Door. Not only could you imagine what it would be like, you could feel through the music the question he posed – as a wild animal faced with the choice of death or living your life out in a zoo, which would you chose? A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

As a teenager at the time Breakfast in America came out, this album was one that I enjoyed from start to finish. I would put on my headphones and lose myself for hours, song after song. There was one song in particular on this album that spoke to me. This song would be my ‘go to’ song when feeling confused, sad and misunderstood, as most teenagers tend to be during those years. Heck, even as an adult we find solace in music. It was uplifting to me then and still is today as it helped me find faith in times I need it most. As Roger spoke to the crowd about this song, it was comforting for me to hear that he wrote this as a teenager, and that it was a way for him to find a voice in those years as well. Years later, he would sit there and tell us how his music touched others, and that perhaps it was because he writes from the heart for himself that it also can touch those heartstrings for so many others. I made a special request that he play “Lord Is It Mine,” and as he called out my name and that of another mother and daughter that had also requested he play it, he dedicated it to us all. It was difficult to hold my composure as I felt a full circle moment occur. Yep, it was pretty darn cool. Thank you Roger for writing this beacon of a song, and for making it even more special to me last night with your dedication.

Roger Hodgson delivered an amazing performance at the SBEC

October 7, 2017

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Roger Hodgson formerly of Supertramp perform at the Sands Event Center to a Sold Out Show!

The evening started out with Roger singing “Take the Long Way Home”, almost immediately fans stood and started to clap and sing along.

Throughout the evening song after song, fans joined in singing, dancing in the aisles and swaying in the rows. The band members were very talented & animated every song they played. You could tell that they truly loved playing for this audience.

In between songs Roger Hodgson read notes from fans, that emailed them prior to the show, about songs they wanted to hear and stories were shared. I could tell this band loves their fans!

Other classics that were played “Hide in Your Shell”, “School”, “Give a Little Bit”, “Fool’s Overture”, “Death” and “A Zoo”. After nearly 2 hours of playing and a standing ovation, the band returned to the stage to perform two more songs ending with “Dreamer”, in which everyone in attendance was singing!

On a personal note, this is the first concert I’ve attended at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center. I’ve been there for other functions like boxing and baseball banquets. The energy that I felt in the room last night was totally amazing and everyone around me felt the same way! Roger Hodgson truly put on an amazing performance and his voice rang throughout!

I look forward to attending future concerts at Sands Bethlehem Event Center!

Interview with Supertramp's Roger Hodgson

Author: Melissa Hulick
Singer/songwriter Roger Hodgson (www.RogerHodgson.com) will be “giving more than a little bit” to his fans when he plays one show only on Saturday, October 7 at Seneca Allegany.

Hodgson co-founded the band Supertramp with Rick Davies, which released their first album in 1970. Selling over 60 million records during the 14 years his legendary voice and songwriting talents made its undeniable sound in the music industry, the list of hits kept coming … “The Logical Song”, “Breakfast in America”, “Give a Little Bit”, “Take the Long Way Home” and “Dreamer”.

I recently caught up with the singer/songwriter and we talked about his leaving the band after 14 years and the reason why … in which he says was a good decision that led to his being in good shape physically and spiritually today as he garners rave reviews as a solo artist.

“The way I'm touring is really under my own conditions now,” said Hodgson. “My belief is that I'm in a service industry. Never a day goes by that I do not express gratitude for the privilege and blessings of being able to do what I love for a living and make people happy.”

For ticket information visit www.senecacasinos.com and click on Allegany.

A CONVERSATION WITH SUPERTRAMP’S ROGER HODGSON

HULICK: We are so excited you are playing the Seneca Allegany Casino on October 7 in Salamanca, NY. Do you have a message for your fans who will be attending?
HODGSON: I'm very excited about coming up and playing the Buffalo, New York area again. I have many wonderful memories of that part of the country and I'm happy to be playing the Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino for the first time. Fans are going to be in for a treat. The band has never sounded better and the songs that have been with me for so many years have never sounded better - “Breakfast in America”, “Take the Long Way Home”, and many others.

HULICK: Your career as lead singer of the legendary group Supertramp was huge, but you have had a remarkable solo career since you left the group. Did you have any doubts when you made the decision to go it alone, and how do you feel it has turned out?
HODGSON: I did not leave Supertramp in order to go it alone. It was really a question of following my heart and trusting that what I was feeling was the correct choice. I knew I had to change my lifestyle … to make raising my kids a priority. It wasn't just that I left Supertramp; I left the music industry for quite a long period of time, for many years.

HULICK: When you made the decision to come back, were you concerned about it at all … with the reaction from not only the industry, but from your fans?
HODGSON: I had no idea what would happen to my music career both, in leaving Supertramp, and also in taking the sabbatical I did from the music industry for so many years. It was a huge leap of faith. All I knew is that I had to follow my heart … which was telling me to stop for a while and be present as my children found their formative legs and grew up. I did not know what to expect when I came back to stage again. Initially, it was me alone on a stage putting out feelers to see if people even remembered me … and here I am 16 years later from those formative steps. The happiness from so many people to see me again, to hear me again, and to hear the songs that I've written has been overwhelming. I feel like the luckiest man alive. Looking back, it was a good decision. Supertramp had been my life for 14 years and I'm very proud of the legacy that I contributed to and the songs that I gave birth to during that time, many of which I still play today and they still sound as fresh as ever. I think my time away from the music business was very good for me and is one of the reasons that I'm in such good shape physically and spiritually today. People always tell me I'm singing so much better today than I did with Supertramp and I can hear it. It's not because my voice is better, but I'm better on the inside.

HULICK: You started writing songs at the age of 12, after learning guitar, and had your first concert of original music at age 13 all while at boarding school. It’s been said your guitar became your best friend during those days. Had you not gone to boarding school, would you still have pursued music?
HODGSON: I inherited my first guitar from my father at the age of 12 when my parents got divorced. Yes, it did become my best friend at boarding school in England, and it was where I went to express the deeper questions and deeper longings of what was happening inside me, as well as the difficulty in finding answers to it all at school. Who knows if I would've had the drive or the same dreams that music provided me had I not gone to boarding school? I think so. Certainly the experiences of boarding school gave me a lot to write about, “The Logical Song” being one obvious example.

HULICK: An interesting piece of music trivia had you recording your first single, “Mr. Boyd”, with a session band that included pianist Reg Dwight, who became known as Elton John. I hope you have a video or photos of that somewhere.
HODGSON: Many people would think I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, having my first recording experience as Argosy at the age of 19 being with a session band that included pianist Reg Dwight, who later became known as Elton John. I remember being pretty awestruck at the level of musicianship that I was suddenly surrounded by and the whole experience. The song “Mr. Boyd” became very close to being a hit in the UK, which would've probably changed my destiny because I wouldn't have met Rick and gone in a different direction with Supertramp.

HULICK: The 20th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana just passed at the end of August. You played at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium per request of Princes William and Harry, which became one of the “goosebump moments” for them as well as the 65,000 attendees, when all stood and sang along with you. What were you feeling at that moment?
HODGSON: I always regretted never meeting or playing for Princess Diana because I had so much love and respect and compassion for her and because she was such a fan ... specifically of my songs that I wrote and later recorded with Supertramp. That regret was healed when I had the chance to honor her memory at Wembley Stadium when Princes William and Harry invited me to be a part of the concert honoring their mother. It truly was a goose bump moment for me as well, when the whole of Wembley Stadium stood up to sing “Give A Little Bit” with me … including Princes William and Harry. It was hard for me not to burst into tears.

HULICK: What one song title of your songs from the Supertramp catalog, or your solo catalog, best describes the four decades of your career?
HODGSON: That's a difficult question. I would have to maybe say “Dreamer”, as I'm a boy whose dreams really have come true.

HULICK: What song title would describe your personal life?
HODGSON: I would probably have to say “Only Because Of You”, as I cannot separate my life and musical journey. With my deep longing to understand and know God, “Only Because Of You” represents the inner inspiration and longing that has driven me to write many of the songs that have come through me.

HULICK: What’s next for Roger Hodgson? Working on any new projects?
HODGSON: One year at a time (chuckles). I have a very busy touring year this year, and again I'm so happy to be playing a handful of select shows in America, and happy that one of them is in Salamanca. I do hope I can get a few of the 60 plus songs that I have burning a hole in my pocket that I have not recorded out there somewhere for fans to hear. Otherwise, now the demand to see me is growing and I'm unable to fulfill all the requests around the world for me to come and play. I expect to stay pretty busy for the foreseeable future … touring and playing my songs for my fans. I am greatly looking forward to seeing our friends and fans in Salamanca on October 7.”

Roger Hodgson: The Adventures of the Super Tramp in the Botanical Garden

Roger Hodgson, who was the leader of the band Supertramp in the seventies and in the early eighties, the Super tramp, successfully faced one of his musical missions in Spain. The chosen venue was the site of the Botanical Garden of Alfonso XIII in Madrid, within the Festival of Las Noches del Botánico. For a little more than two hours he made a nostalgic trip around Supertramp's greatest hits, not forgetting the best songs from his solo career.

1. The adventure begins: Crisis, what crisis?

The Super Tramp demonstrated, with the opening of the show, that magnificent Take The Long Way Home (first of the songs that he interpreted of the masterful Breakfast In America) that the musical superpowers that he treasures continue at full power. A sharp voice with certain smooth tones, fast fingers and inspired on the keyboards and, above all, solid compositions such as rock stones. Songs that have stood the test of time like being inside an American cedar barrel. They have matured, gained in body and taste, and now they discover, in all their relief, a colorful symphony.

In his first speech to the audience he expressed his intentions, the object of his fight on the stage. We are immersed in a time of crisis and problems, he told us, but in the next two hours of the show he intended to make us separate those anxieties from our hearts and then defeat our personal crisis. He only needed to ask himself - as he did with Supertamp in 1975, with the album Crisis, What Crisis? - where the crisis was, because he thought to beat it after one allowed himself to be healed by spell of his music.

But there's no a superhero who stands proud presents himself in his battle against the forces of crisis and bad times without a team, a whole Fantastic League. So, the Fantastic Four who helped Roger Hodgson in the titanic task were: Kevin Adamson on keyboards, with the powers of his multiple arms dealing with the piano or synthesizers; Aaron MacDonald and his musical blow, developed in impeccable saxophone, clarinet or harmonic solos; David J. Carpenter and his percussive fingers on the bass and, finally, the defense of the squadron, at the drums, Bryan Head, raising a wall of sound with its drums executed with simplicity and style.

The Super Tramp launched his first demolishing attacks against the crisis using one of the heavyweights of the repertoire, the song School, from the 1974's Crime Of The Century. That piped, childish voice was the best remedy to fight all ills, and if it's joined the mythical harmonica, there was no doubt about the ravages he would make in the audience. From this second song the audience was already surrendered to Hodgson.

2. Episode two: love comes to the rescue and makes us wake up

But the weapons of the Super Tramp were many, a whole arsenal of delicate compositions, with their touches of complexity, very well wrapped by the band, always in a perfect tone, filling the gaps left by Roger Hodgson. Alternating with some songs of his solo career, the musician from Portsmouth attacked Breakfast In America, Hide In Your Shell —it was especially nice to meet this song that embraced us as if an old friend came to meet us — and The Logical Song. If the monster of the crisis and problems still stood, with this last song sank its knee down on the floor. The songs from Crime Of The Century and Breakfast In America were lethal, perfect to fight these bad times of tribulations.

After the high moment of The Logical Song, the Super Tramp started with an intimate and introspective approach to love, the other vehicle necessary to obtain a complete victory. He linked two very lyrical compositions, Teach Me To Love Again and Lord Is It Mine. The first song had a peculiarity: no one could have heard it before because it was not yet recorded. It was an absolute brand new track. The delicacy of the song was perfect for Lord Is It Mine, one of the most tender compositions of Supertramp, and also, in a way, a kind of prayer for the connection of all souls. Love, that universal language.

And that love, must manifest itself as well with the animals, in a certain way a metaphor was put on our wild interior and now domesticated by the problems, the fears and the obligations. Roger Hodgson formulated the dilemma to the audience: If being all of us wild animals and caught prisoners ... Would we prefer death before ending up in a zoo? Then, no one could resist thinking if his life was developing in a zoo, trapped in a cell, condemned by routines and anguish, while the chords of the ballad Death And Zoo were growing up to overflow the stage with the elephants' trumpets and the sounds of the jungle.

And as if it were a speech written in that way, after the reflection and awareness of the prison in which we were obliged to go, The Awakening sounded, another brand new one not yet recorded: It was time to wake up, take the reins, take action.

3. Final Chapter: The Super Tramp's victory and his Fantastic Four

It was Had A Dream the most powerful moment of the show. The song, belonging to Hodgson's first solo album, In The Eye Of The Storm, 1984, sounded blunt on the band's instruments, and it was when they moved further away from the art-rock, trade mark of the musician, to simply approach to rock. A wave that would lead to the end of the show, which was closed with a trio of songs that struck directly into the heart of the monster of the crisis, made him stagger and eventually fall as King Kong does on the pavement in each of his films. The Super Tramp had won, along with his Fantastic Four, at the Botanical Garden.

And that exquisite batch of songs began with Breakfast In America's Child Of Vision, with its powerful set of voices and symphonic touches. It followed with Dreamer and the return to childhood of many of those there, at the time of illusions, which mixed with the memories of the adolescence, when this song tinged the lives of many of us: a blow of synthesizers.

And to finish: Fool's Overture. The audience surrendered to the performance of one of the songs that most approached Supertramp to the symphonic rock, from that very inspired Even In The Quietest Moments of 1977. A long suite full of musical details, with which many returned to their happiest times, when it seemed that they were going to eat the world ...

Roger Hodgson was still able to return to run the final encore: Give A Little Bit and It's Raining Again, under the delirium of everybody there. The singer's closeness had been total, surrendered to his Spanish audience from the beginning, being very close and always eager to please. After all, a Super Hero is due to his audience, I thought, but then I remembered something that warned me that this positive and optimistic mood has always been a style mark on Roger Hodgson.

While delighting people with his performance of Give A Little Bit —also from Even In The Quietest Moments— came to my head a TV show. It was the year 1985 and Hodgson was doing the promotional television tour because his first solo album. In the almost always infamous Tocata TV show, he played Had A Dream and In Jeopardy, with the usual playback of that age, after answering some questions with great kindness,he did live and totally unexpected, guitar in hand and full of enthusiasm, a Give A Little Bit that should be history of the Archives of Spanish Public Television. It turns out that, by then, this Super Hero was already fighting against the ghosts.

4. Epilogue: And happiness returns to rain on our heads

And then, it comes It's Raining Again. Actually, the Super Tramp and his team had long since defeated the crisis and its problems. They had kicked her butt, sending her far away. It may be that at that time it already flew over the Manzanares, (river of Madrid), or much beyond, while the audience, in chorus, sang so loud that spell that is the lyrics of It's Raining Again.

And it was curious that a song from a twilight album, that Famous Last Words ... from 1982, which ended with Hodgson leaving the band, was one of the biggest hits in the history of Supertramp. But it is that the masterpieces overlap all kinds of problems, whether they are disagreements, arguments or anger. As the music of Roger Hodgson, the Super Tramp, triumphantly fighted over a country under the dark due to the problems and was able to draw the coal of the anguish of the hearts, for two elegant hours, to pour upon us the notes of a prodigious healing.

Roger Hodgson, very close to an audience that makes them “forget their problems”

Roger Hodgson, an ex-champion of Supertramp, was longing to return to Spain and tonight has made it clear why during a very warm concert in which he has boasted of good connection with an audience he has invited them to forget their problems” through many classic songs and some unpublished ones.

With the catchy Take the Long Way Home” began an outdoor evening framed in the Nights of the Botanic, which has enabled Hodgson (Portsmouth, 1950) to have a close and amusing encounter with the audience - of mature age who have applauded the singer during the first of the six summer concerts marked in the country.

After a good night in Spain, the former vocalist and composer of Supertramp has asked the technical team to turn on the lights to see the faces of the audience and tell them that although his Spanish has not improved,” he and his band were desiring to return to Spain
because, in their opinion, "there is no better place."

We are living in crazy times, but for the next few hours I only ask one thing: to forget the problems, the Brit asked during a nice and applauded presentation to return to school with “School,” a song from his old band.

As a contrast came the ballad Lovers in the Wind,” which served, said the musician, to remember that love is the most important.
Also, to open the drawer of his works as soloist with a song pertaining to In the Eye of the Storm,” the first of the three solo albums.

Although, as could be guessed, the encounter was played by the glorious songs of Supertramp, the progressive rock band - founded in 1969 by Rick Davies and by Hodgson himself - considered one of the most emblematic of the 70s and 80s.

The best example of how the issues of the British group went deep has been revealed today with the arrival of Breakfast in America,” a song that has excited those who occupied the stands and the track.

It has also allowed the rest of the musicians who usually surrounds the singer, Aaron Macdonald (saxophone, harmonica and keyboards), Bryan Head (drums), Kevin Adamson (keyboards), and David J Carmenter (bass).

The Logical Song,” another sure bet, had a large number of the spectators dancing and enchanted with the characteristic sharp voice of Hodgson, that in the year 2001 toured with Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band.

After the first half hour of the concert, the musician from Portsmouth has stopped in his trip
to give a song that the public has never heard because it is not recorded.” Teach Me to Love Again,” which he added another unrecorded song, The Awakening,” with a letter that speaks, said the composer, about how important is forgiveness.

Joker and fun, the one who was a member of Supertramp has again dared with the Spanish to throw a dilemma to the public before giving way to Death and a Zoo,” which has highlighted the game of lights. If you were a wild animal and you were captured, would you prefer death or live locked in a zoo?
he asked.

After that and other songs of melodic character and framed within his solo career, the spirit had declined but returned with joy to Child of Vision,” “Dreamer, and Fool's Overture,” three of his classics of Supertramp that neither fall into oblivion, nor suffer any wear.

And then Hodgson - who composed a good part of the group's musical repertoire - does not give way to this legacy, since he is continually traveling through many countries like Spain, where he still has five performances that are very happy: Barcelona (12 July), Sant Cugat (13 July), Cambrils (11 August), Laredo (13 August) and Vigo (14 August).

Just as happy were those present at the time of the encores, when it has come to the sound of a recognized Give a Little Bit,” with the vocalist and his acoustic guitar, and then a powerful It's Raining Again.”

Thus ended a night in which the problems really seemed to be far away. Hodgson's closeness to his fans has been grateful for a final ovation as warm as the musician could expect from those he has today considered his “friends.”

LIVE: ROGER HODGSON @ ROYAL ALBERT HALL, LONDON
Posted by Simon Reed | May 24, 2017

Roger Hodgson performing at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 May 2017 (Simon Reed)

For two and a half hours on Saturday night, Roger Hodgson encouraged a sell-out Royal Albert Hall crowd to momentarily park the bad stuff taking place in the world and concentrate instead on a collected shared love for music and humanity. It’s a speech he gives at every gig. At the time, I interpreted it as a sideswipe at the current incumbent in the White House – it’s a popular observation after all. Forty-eight hours later, Hodgson’s remarks now seem more prescient than ever.

Roger Hodgson performing at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 May 2017 (Simon Reed)

Roger Hodgson was the major song writing force of 1970s/1980s prog/rock/pop megastars Supertramp. He can probably now walk down most streets without being recognised (not bad for a man whose band has sold upwards of sixty million albums) but his voice remains unmistakable – a beautiful pure tenor matched in contemporary circles perhaps only by Jon Anderson.

Since leaving Supertramp in 1983, he has released three studio albums under his own name and has continued to tour. He has a semi-permanent residency at the Royal Albert Hall every spring and we were lucky enough to be in attendance this time.

Roger Hodgson performing at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 May 2017 (Simon Reed)

Seated from behind a synthesiser that emulated the classic Wurlitzer sound so synonymous with his former band, Hodgson opened the show with Take The Long Way Home, a classic from 1979’s Breakfast In America. Hodgson doesn’t tour with any of his former colleagues but he has surrounded himself with a band of exceptional quality. From stage left, we hear the harmonica of Aaron Macdonald.

Aaron Macdonald performing at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 May 2017 (Simon Reed)

Before the song is out, Macdonald will have also contributed keyboards and an exquisite clarinet solo. Before the night is out, he will have played soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, a tin whistle, more keys, a plethora of percussion instruments and provided multiple vocal harmony parts. Aaron must be one of the most cost-effective touring musicians on earth.

Roger Hodgson performing at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 May 2017 (Simon Reed)

Before I leave the photo pit, I get the privilege of School (the instantly recognisable instrumental break of which is one of my all-time favourite pieces of music) and In Jeopardy, a track from Hodgson’s debut solo album In The Eye Of The Storm. I retired to my seat and sat back to enjoy the rest of the show. The wonderful thing about a Roger Hodgson performance is that you don’t only get great songs played by exceptional musicians. You can get that elsewhere and still come away feeling a little unmoved if the vibe isn’t right. A night with Hodgson lifts the soul and the spirit, you’ll simply not find a warmer and more engaging performer anywhere.

He dedicates Hide In Your Shell to audience member Verity. Her parents were also in the audience and had asked him to do it. At the end of Breakfast In America he comments that when he wrote it, he never played it to his girlfriend of the time (“Take a look at my girlfriend, she’s the only one I’ve got. Not much of a girlfriend, I never seem to get a lot”). “I think it would have been terminal for the relationship if I had”.

Roger Hodgson performing at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 May 2017 (Simon Reed)

The first set closed with another classic from Breakfast in America, The Logical Song, an autobiographical account of how it felt to be packed off to private boarding school in the 1960’s. There was a short intermission and the band returned with Child Of Vision, a further personal favourite. To this point, second keys man Kevin Adamson had appeared to be playing a supporting role – the odd string sound here, the odd Hammond organ part there. Mid way through Child Of Vision, he descended from his riser and took a seat at a hitherto unused grand piano. His solo to close out the song was mind blowing.

Roger Hodgson performing at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 May 2017 (Simon Reed)

Lord Is It Mine (another moving tune), Death And A Zoo and Dreamer were further highlights in the second half. By the time the latter tune came along, all initial attempts by the stewards to maintain seat discipline had been dispensed with and I’m pleased to say the punters were dancing in the aisles. The main set closed with Fool’s Overture, an eleven-minute song in three movements found on the 1977 Supertramp album Even In The Quietest Moments – from a time when the band was more prog than pop.

Roger Hodgson performing at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 May 2017 (Simon Reed)

The encores included Give A Little Bit and It’s Raining Again – from a time when the band was more pop than prog. Audience members in the know opened their brollies and span them above their heads. An umbrella is an essential prop for a Roger Hodgson show, regardless of what the weather is doing outside.

Roger Hodgson performing at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 May 2017 (Simon Reed)

With that, Hodgson and his impeccable band were gone. We all streamed out of the venue, happy and relaxed, reveling in our enjoyment of a couple of hours of wonderful live music. Two days later, audience members did exactly that leaving the Manchester Arena and twenty-two people died.

Writing a subjective review about a piece of art feels a somewhat facile activity when young lives have been taken and extended families destroyed by a disgusting act of pointless terror. The only comfort is knowing that this understanding and appreciation of art and culture is just one of the things that bonds us; that separates us from the crazed fanatics who seek to try and plant fear in our lives. Perhaps if ever there was a time to focus on that, it is now.

There is one more performance from Roger Hodgson in the UK this year and it is at Stowe School (a return to the place that partly inspired The Logical Song) on Friday 26 May. Tickets are available here:

Roger Hodgson – “Breakfast in América”

Com a turnê intitulada “Breakfast in América”, Hodgson levou o público ao delírio com as canções: “Dreamer”, “Fool’s Overture,” “Give a Little Bit,” “Take the Long Way Home,” “The Logical Song,” “Breakfast in América,” “School,” e “It’s Raining Again”.

The legendary Roger Hodgson, ex. Vocalist of the English band Supertramp, was again in Belo Horizonte and snatched the crowd that filled BH Hall to once again revere their beautiful songs, in a spectacle that already missed!

With the tour titled “Breakfast in America,” Hodgson led audiences to delirium with the songs “Dreamer,” “Fool’s Overture,” “Give a Little Bit,” “Take the Long Way Home,” “The Logical Song, “Breakfast in America,” “School,” and “It’s Raining Again”.

Owner of a remarkable voice, Roger Hodgson exalted the receptivity in Minas lands, saying to have a special affection for the belorizontinos, where he already had the opportunity to present himself other times.

In a recent interview with G1 – the Globo news portal, Hodgson said how important it is to bring music to people’s hearts and stressed, “You can imagine how special it is for me to look outside and see people laughing, crying and singing “Give a Little Bit,” “Breakfast in America,” “Dreamer,” or “It’s Raining Again,” and play those songs and remind them of so many things in their lives. Maybe when life was a little easier. That’s why it’s my joy to play the songs that people want to hear, songs that have become classics, “he said.

Enjoy Roger's new interview with Argentina's Télam Agencia Nacional de Noticias for his March 11 and 12 Buenos Aires shows. For the original article in Spanish, click here. Approximate English translation below:

Roger Hodgson: "I hope my show is an escape from problems for two hours"

Former again on Saturday and Sunday in Argentina when he will offer two shows at the Teatro Gran Rex, located in Corrientes 857, in this city, where he will review classics from his old band, some compositions Of his solo stage and "two or three surprises that people have never heard".

"I know that music can be a wonderful medicine, an escape from problems for two hours, so I hope I can achieve that for some people. We live in troubled times because of the things that are happening, so the music can be a real help, "mused the musician, in dialogue with Télam.

Enthusiastic about this new visit to the country, a custom that opened in 1998 and became a constant in recent years, Hodgson said that the local public "won my heart from the first time I was in Buenos Aires."

"I love the people of Argentina. It is a very special place, so I am happy to return. They are very enthusiastic. In my previous shows, I saw people laughing, I saw people crying. They love to sing. They are very emotional, "said the artist, who spared no praise when referring to his local supporters.

In this occasion, the English musician will be accompanied by Aaron MacDonald, o n sax; Kevin Adamson, on keyboards; Bryan Head, on drums; and David Carpenter, on bass.

Born in 1950 in Portsmouth, England, Hodgson formed Supertramp in 1969, along with Rick Davis, after having gone through several teenage groups, among them Argosy, who enrolled a young Elton John on the piano.

Until his departure in 1983, with the popular band recorded five studio albums ("Crime of the century", "Crisis? What crisis ?," "Even in the quietest moment", "Breakfast in America" and "Famous last words" ) And a live one ("Paris"), with classics like "Dreamer", "Give a little bit", "Take the long way home", "School" and "It's raining again", among others, that can be listened to The next weekend at the shows of the Gran Rex.

With "In the Eye of the Storm", Hodgson opened his solo career in a work where he performed all the instruments and recorded popular songs like "In jeopardy", "Had a dream" and "Lovers in the wind".

A hard injury to his wrist in the mid-1980s seemed to put an end to his musical career, however, against all odds, the musician recovered and went ahead with a career in which he decided to prioritize the tours over the Launch of new discs.

Days before his arrival in the country, former Supertramp spoke with this agency of his former band, the different stages of his career, the things that inspire him and his days as a member of the group that accompanies former beatle Ringo Starr, among other things.

Télam: How will the shows be presented in this opportunity in Argentina?
Roger Hodgson:
I will be playing several songs that I wrote throughout my life, including some Supertramp that people want to hear, some of my solo stage and two or three surprises that people have never heard of.

T: His solo debut ("In the Eye of the Storm", 1984) did not have a commercial success in other countries, but in Argentina several of those songs became classics. What do you attribute it to?
RH:
RH: I really do not know. Sometimes it's marketing. Sometimes the record company does a good job. I'm surprised, but it makes me very happy that you tell me that because I'm going to play songs from that album precisely. I will play "In Jeopardy", "Lovers in the wind" and "Had a dream", probably.

T: Why do you think Supertramp's songs are still valid despite being composed around 40 years ago?
RH:
I do not think it's a question of age. I think a song becomes classic because the composer manages to touch an intimate fiber in people. So, they are not old songs, they are timeless songs. Many songs I made are cool. Letters are, in many cases, more relevant today than when I composed them, for example "A little bit", because it is a time when we need to take care of ourselves. I love to sing it and people do the same.

T: Your lyrics were always very spiritual. What things inspire you at the moment to compose?
RH:
The same old things still inspire me. I try to be a good man, give my heart. I spent my life spinning with my music because I think it's my way of giving my heart. I always believed in serving and music is a service. I am pleased with what I do because I serve life, God, people, through hope; Carrying music that touches their hearts, and makes them feel better and hold their spirit high. I try to be a voice to people.

T: In his song "Death and a zoo" talks about the right of the animals. Are you particularly interested in this topic?
RH:
We should all be concerned not only about the rights of animals, but about everything that happens on the planet. But, yes, it is not a much talked about subject in the media, but I feel that I am not alone. I love animals, I love nature and deeply wound my heart to see so many unnecessary abuses, cruelty and even killings of whole species. I hope we can all awaken and react in time to save what is a disaster, not only for animals, but also for all of humanity.

T: Your last studio album dates back to 2000. Why did not you record again?
RH: We live in different times. It's a different era and it's very difficult to find three or four months to be in a studio to make a record. There are other priorities for me right now, like playing in different countries and offering people a two-hour trip, where maybe you can give them more than with a new album.

T: In 2001, it was part of the All Starr Band. What do you remember about that experience with Ringo Starr?
RH: It was wonderful. Ringo is a wonderful person. I had wonderful times. I grew up with the Beatles, I was a teenager at the time and it hit me very deeply as a musician and as a man. They inspired me and showed me what was possible with music. It was great to be on tour with a Beatle and hear a lot of stories from his own mouth.

T: After so many years, what do you think of Supertramp?
RH: It was a great band, with great songs written by me and other great songs written by Rick Davis. But many of those great songs were not written in collaboration. The band I'm with can now play those songs in an incredible way. So I am very proud of the band that I will take to Buenos Aires and I am looking forward to seeing us. I know I had to schedule a second show, so that makes me very happy.
