Bruxelles, dimanche 25 janvier 2015. Il est presque 18h00 quand j'obtiens à l'entrée le sésame qui m'autorisera à officier comme chasseur d'images pendant un de mes premiers concerts de l'année. Une fois dans la place, je constate que la salle est presque pleine. Manquent encore quelques retardataires et autres distraits qui se sont laissé surprendre par l'heure inhabituelle de ce concert.

Soudain les lumières s’éteignent, plongeant la salle dans l’obscurité. Sur scène apparaît une jeune femme charmante avec sa guitare. Elle est la simplicité même. Pas de chichi. En quelques mots elle se présente. Elle s’appelle Natalia Doco et vient d’Argentine. Si elle a quitté son pays d’origine pour s’installer à Paris, c’est par amour, pour vivre avec l’homme de son coeur. Désorientée au début à cause de la barrière de la langue, elle se met à écrire des chansons qui donneront naissance à un premier album intitulé «Mucho Chino». Heureuse d’être à Bruxelles et manifestement impressionnée par sa rencontre avec l’immense Roger Hodgson, elle égrène les notes sur sa guitare et nous envoûte avec sa voix au magnifique timbre latino. Ses chansons racontent des histoires simples et belles. La combinaison voix-guitare fait merveille. Les compositions sont tantôt en espagnol, tantôt en anglais comme son premier single «Freezing (In The Sun)». La belle étonne aussi avec une reprise très personnelle du «Je me suis fait tout petit» de Brassens. Gageons que l’on entendra encore parler de ce petit rayon de soleil musical…
 

Après un bref entracte, la sonnerie retentit pour annoncer le début du hors d’œuvre de la soirée. Sur scène arrivent Roger Hodgson et ses musiciens. A l’arrière-plan le décor qui l’accompagne toujours, c’est-à-dire des plantes à hautes tiges devant lesquelles sont placés les instruments. Le piano bien sûr, mais aussi le synthé, les guitares… Toujours aussi sympathique et modeste, l'artiste accueille le public qui lui adresse d’entrée de jeu un tonnerre d’applaudissements. Bruxelles est la première date de la nouvelle tournée 2015 et l’ami Roger a l’air content d’être là. Le public aussi. Voilà donc un excellent début. Et nous voilà partis pour un peu plus de 2 heures d’une musique intemporelle et grandiose. Si la voix est un peu hésitante dans les notes hautes pendant le premier morceau, elle ne met pas longtemps à s’échauffer et restera à la hauteur pendant tout le reste de la représentation.

Sur scène, Roger Hodgson est entouré de la même équipe que la dernière fois que nous l’avions vu à Durbuy en 2013. Pour rappel, ses comparses ont pour nom Aaron Macdonald (Saxophones, Harmonica, Keyboards, Backing vocals), Bryan Head (Drums), Kevin Adamson (Keyboards, Backing vocals) et David J Carpenter (Bass, Backing vocals).

Si chaque concert de Roger Hodgson est une expérience unique, c’est très certainement grâce à ce supplément d’humanité et cette gentillesse qui émanent de sa personne. L’homme est resté humble malgré les millions de disques vendus. Il s’adresse au public d’égal à égal et n’a d’autre ambition que de partager un moment d’évasion, loin des soucis et tracas de la vie de tous les jours. Et ce public de tous âges, qui a été nourri aux succès de Supertramp et de la carrière solo de Roger, partage avec bonheur et enthousiasme ce moment de communion musicale intense.

Même s’il y aura toujours des déçus qui auraient aimé entendre tel ou tel morceau, la setlist proposée est un véritable petit bijou dans le genre :

La grande force du répertoire de Roger Hodgson est de pouvoir s’appuyer sur un nombre incroyable de titres majeurs qui resteront à tout jamais des jalons incontournables dans l’histoire de la musique. Mais même quand il propose des morceaux moins connus comme «Death and a Zoo», la magie opère tout aussi bien. Il faut dire que les musiciens sur scène sont parfaits, tant aux commandes de leurs instruments que dans les backing vocals. Ils arrivent, comme en studio, à mélanger subtilement le son de leur voix dans les chœurs à celle de Roger. Et bien que le Cirque Royal ait été la première date de la nouvelle tournée, après une coupure de plusieurs semaines, tout était parfaitement au point et le public a passé un superbe dimanche soir.

Petite anecdote pour finir: à la fin des rappels, Roger remercie le public et propose de terminer le concert par un morceau ironique qui met tout le monde de bonne humeur (il parle de « put a smile on your face »). C’est alors qu’il entonne «It’s Raining Again». Quand les lumières se rallument, je quitte la salle la tête pleine d’images et de bonnes vibrations. En regagnant ma voiture, je constate que, dans la rue, il pleut de nouveau…

Brussels, Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015. It is almost 6:00 p.m. when I get to the entrance and pick up my photo pass, which allow me to officially take photos during one of my first concerts of the year. Once in place, I see that the room is almost full. Missing a few stragglers and others that have been surprised by the unusual hour of this show. Suddenly the lights went out, plunging the room into darkness. On stage appears a charming young woman with her guitar. It is simplicity her. No fuss. In a few words she presents herself. Her name is Natalia Doco and comes from Argentina. If she left her home country to settle in Paris, it is for love, to live with the man of her heart. Disoriented at first because of the language barrier, she began to write songs that will give birth to a first album "Mucho Chino" . Happy to be in Brussels and obviously impressed by her meeting with the great Roger Hodgson, she recites the notes on her guitar and bewitches us with her beautiful voice in Latin timbre. Her songs tell simple stories. The voice-guitar combination works wonders. The compositions are sometimes in Spanish, sometimes in English as her first single "Freezing (In The Sun)". The beautiful singer also surprised us with a very personal cover of "Low Profile" of Brassens. I bet that we still hear of this little ray of sunshine ... musically.
 

After a brief intermission, the bell rang to announce the start of appetizers for the evening. Arrive on stage Roger Hodgson and his musicians. A background decor which always accompanies him, that is to say, tall plants are placed in behind the instruments. There are of course the piano, the synth, guitars ... Always so friendly and modest, the artist welcomes the public and they respond with thunderous applause. Brussels is the first date of the tour again in 2015 and our friend Roger looks happy to be there. The public also. So a great start. Off we went for a little more than 2 hours a timeless and grandiose music. If the voice is a little hesitant in the high notes during the first song, it does not take long to heat up and will stay up for the rest of the performance.

On stage, Roger Hodgson is surrounded by the same team the last time we had seen in Durbuy in 2013. As a reminder, his cronies are named Aaron Macdonald (saxophones, harmonica, keyboards, backing vocals), Bryan Head (Drums), Kevin Adamson (keyboards, backing vocals), and David J Carpenter (bass, backing vocals).

If every Roger Hodgson concert is a unique experience, it is certainly thanks to more humanity and the kindness emanating from his person. The man remained humble despite the millions of records sold. He addresses the audience as equals and has no other ambition than to share a moment of escape from the stress and hassle of everyday life. And people of all ages, which was fed to the success of Supertramp and Roger's solo career, shares with happiness and enthusiasm and that moment of intense musical communion.

While it will always be some disappointment for those who would like to hear this or another piece, the proposed setlist is a jewel in the genre:

The great strength of Roger Hodgson’s set list is to be supported by an incredible number of major titles that will remain forever unavoidable milestones in the history of music. But even when it offers less known songs like "Death and a Zoo," it has the magic as well. It must be said that the musicians on stage are perfect, both in command of their instruments and in the backing vocals. They arrive in the studio, to subtly blend the sound of their voice in the chorus with Roger. And although the Royal Circus was the first date of the tour again after a break of several weeks, everything was fully developed and the audience had a great Sunday night.

Anecdote to finish: at the end reminders, Roger thanks the public and offers to complete the concert with an ironic piece that puts everyone in a good mood (he speaks of "  put a smile on your face  " ). Then he sings "It's Raining Again". When the lights come back, I left the room full of pictures head and good vibrations. By regaining my car, I see in the street, it's raining again ...
