Terug in Amsterdam

In The Eye Of The Storm).

Roger Hodgson is the former lead singer of Supertramp, but that addition might actually be superfluous (just as with Sting, not written as "the former Police singer"). The now 65-year-old Briton was not only the singer of most popular and best songs of Supertramp, he wrote them all. In early July he performed at the festival in Park City Live Heerlen and Wednesday it was already sold out for months in Amsterdam; Royal Theatre Carré is the perfect location for his show.

The first time the undersigned saw Roger Hodgson live, I will never forget. It was June 2, 1998 and he performed solo in the small hall of the Oosterpoort in Groningen, where only about 80-100 lovers were present. I sat in the front row and just two meters from the stage. Hodgson had requested just what they wanted to hear. He had previously said that they would like to do, with the only restriction that he had the song itself (co) wrote. And so came (to me) obscure album tracks over which he occasionally had to ask what key he was playing or how the text began again. It was a very intimate act, as if he was playing in your living room!

In recent years I have seen Hodgson several times. One time solo, then as a duo (with saxophonist), then with big band and even large (Polish) symphony. And every time it was a feast of recognition, with the only downside that it appeared almost the same setlist every time. Prior to the Carré concert I watched the play list of recent months and that were almost identical, perhaps because these were almost all outdoor performances. How would it be on Wednesday?

Back in Amsterdam
Before he played a note, Hodgson got a standing ovation from the audience. Take The Long Way Home is an applicable opener of the concert, with Hodgson behind his keyboard, and then he says that he is very happy to be back in Amsterdam after seventeen years (however, he played in 2000 in the old room of the Milky Way, ed.) and he will play all songs that mean a lot for him and for many people who love his music. The second song is played School, one of the many songs that Roger plays the acoustic guitar. And let's be honest: it sounds exactly like you know the song on Supertramp's live Paris album.

The most eye (and ear) catching musician in the excellent band, multi-instrumentalist Aaron MacDonald who plays almost everything which is blown: harmonica, various saxophones, flute, clarinet, melodica. He also plays keyboards and percussion and sings background vocals as well most of the duet parts with Hodgson. The other band members are Kevin Adamson on keyboards and backing vocals, Bryan Head on drums and David J. Carpenter on bass.

Hodgson will again sit behind his keyboard and plays the first of his non-Supertramp songs, In Jeopardy (from his album In The Eye Of The Storm). He says after this song he is very happy with the feedback he gets on Facebook and especially the guestbook on his website. Some songs he plays tonight, through this media submitted as requested. Lovers In The Wind (from the same solo album) is the first of them. These two songs are unknown to those not so familiar with his solo career, with Breakfast In America the proverbial roof is blown off!

The only real voice of Supertramp

The second set follows after half an hour break and includes Had A Dream (Sleeping With The Enemy) - where Hodgson is suddenly playing electric guitar - and a splendid performance of Even In The Quietest Moments. If Everyone Was Listening, one of those beautiful ballads is followed by probably one of man's most popular compositions: Dreamer. He closes the second set with a re-impressive performance of one of his classics, Fool's Overture. Hodgson says before the song starts that were originally three different songs that he just could not get finished, and he decided to join them. The concert ends with three encores: first, the beautiful love song Two Of Us, and of course the big hits Give A Little Bit and It's Raining Again, with virtually everyone standing and singing along.

Although in advance, it was announced the concert in Carré would be finished at ten past, in practice three minutes later. In short, the concert will take about two and a quarter hours. Roger Hodgson proved again tonight that he is the only true voice of Supertramp. The whole evening he is with excellent voice and at age 65 lost none of his energy. And what the setlist concerned, this was really different than in previous concerts.
