Und dass einem beim Erscheinen von Roger Hodgson auf der Bühne kurz der Atem stockt, passt da nur allzu gut zu den klimatischen Verhältnissen in der Musik-Arena auf dem Tollwood-Gelände: Wie aus den späten 70ern und frühen 80er-Jahren herausgefallen steht er da, der Supertramp-Star von einst. Schulterlanges Haar, mintgrünes, leicht gemustertes, flatterndes Hemd und eine erstaunliche Retro-Bundfaltenhose. Umgeben von sphärisch beleuchteten Bäumen und schillernden Lichteffekten ist der Zeitsprung perfekt. Bühne frei für musikalische Höhenflüge und Film ab für Erinnerungen. Zwanzig Jahre und mehr. Der Schalter ist umgelegt, sobald Rodger Hodgson seine unverwechselbare Stimme erhebt, sobald er den ersten Akkord von "Take The Long Way Home" auf seinem Keyboard anschlägt. Und spätestens da sind sich wohl alle Fans sicher, dass das Supertramp-Feeling schlechthin am besten und nur mit Roger Hodgson funktioniert. Auch wenn die ehemaligen Kollegen fast zeitgleich auf Tour sind. Roger Hodgson ist die Stimme und die Seele von Supertramp. 1983 hatte er Sound-Partner Rick Davies und die Band verlassen und seine Solokarriere gestartet. Auf dieser Tour wird er nur von einem Musiker, Aaron MacDonald, begleitet. Ansonsten Hodgson pur auf den Tasten und den Saiten – und trotz aller Vergangenheitsmomente sehr gegenwärtig.
Der 60-Jährige spielt viele der vielen Hits der Erfolgsband: "Dreamer", ,,Give A Little Bit”, "Logical Song", "Lovers In The Wind", "Don’t Leave Me Now" oder "It’s Raining Again". Dann seine Lieblingssongs und die, von denen er ahnt und weiß, dass sie Menschen glücklich gemacht haben. Die Botschaft seiner Lieder ist ihm, dem begnadeten Texter und Songschreiber, wichtig. "Manche Lieder, etwa ,Hide In Your Shell’, hatten und haben auch eine stärkende Kraft", sagt er. Und kommt dabei unaufgeregt spirituell und charismatisch daher. Doch trotz der Magie des Moments und der Zeitreise schleicht sich ein neuer Ton in die Songs. Souverän, gelassen und selbstbewusst. Böse Stimmen würden von einem Hauch Routine reden. Unverändert bestechend hingegen die Kompositionen, die Faszination seines Spiels am Flügel oder Keyboard. Ein enormer Sound. Höhepunkt sicherlich das legendäre "School". And to gasp for a moment, when Roger Hodgson enters the stage, fits to these climatic circumstances in the music arena on the Tollwood site: He looks like he's fallen from the late 70´s and early 80´s, the legendary Supertramp star. Shoulder-length hair, mint green, lightly patterned, shimming shirt and amazing retro pleated trousers. Surrounded by spherical illuminated trees and iridescent light show, the leap in time is perfect. Get ready for musical highlights and many memories. Twenty years and more. The time button is pushed, as soon as Roger Hodgson starts to sing with his unique voice, as soon as he plays the first chord of “Take the Long Way Home” on his keyboard. And from this moment on all the fans agree that the real Supertramp feeling only works with and works the best with Roger Hodgson. Even though the old band colleagues are on tour at the same time. Roger Hodgson is the voice and soul of Supertramp. In 1983 the sound partner of Rick Davies left the band and started his solo career. On this tour he is only accompanied by one musician named Aaron McDonald. Apart from that Hodgson is pure on keys and strings- and despite all moments of the past he´s very present. The 60-year-old plays many of the hits of the successful band like “Dreamer”, “Give a Little Bit”, Logical Song”, “Lovers in The Wind”, “Don´t Leave Me Now”, or “It´s Raining Again”. Then he plays his favorite songs and also those, he anticipates and knows, that they made many people happy. The message of his songs is very important to the highly gifted lyricist and songwriter. “Some songs like ´Hide in Your Shell` for example had and still have a strengthening effect”, he says. And while he mentions this, he appears so unexcitedly spiritual and charismatic. But despite of the magic of the moment and the time journey there is a new sound sneaking in the songs. Sovereign, calm and self-confident. Malicious tongues would call it a tang of routine. Still steady irresistible are the compositions, the fascination of his play on the piano or the keyboard. An enormous sound. Highlight for sure is the legendary “School”. Anytime at this humid evening the securities in the tent give up. They open the doors. They let fresh air in and the people are dancing, wherever they want. With joy, vitality and full of emotions. Two Italians in the queue must have known that.
