Deggendorf. Es gibt Musiktitel, die bleiben zeitlos aktuell. »Breakfast in America« ist so ein Song, das gleichnamige Album der 1969 gegründeten englischen Band Supertramp erschien 1979. Wieder zehn Jahre später startete der BR seine erste Radltour. Und so wird aus 2009 ein richtiges Jubiläumsjahr. 1200 Radler machten bei der 20. Tour am Freitag in der Donaustadt Station (DZ berichtete), am Abend gastierte Roger Hodgson - die Stimme von Supertramp - auf Einladung des BR auf der Ackerloh. »Wahnsinn, faszinierend«, kommentiert ein Pärchen, als Roger Hodgson am Piano »Lovers in the Wind« aus seinem ersten 1984 veröffentlichten Solo-Album »The eye of the storm« intoniert. Zusammen mit dem Saxofonisten Aaron McDonald gelingt es Hogdson, trotz einer Kulisse von mehr als 2500 Besuchern, eine fast clubartige Atmosphäre zu schaffen. Das liegt zum einen an den lyrischen und leisen Songs, mit Gitarre, Keyboard und am Piano begleitet, zum anderen an den fast beiläufigen Worten bei der Zwischenmoderation Hodgsons. »Guten Abend« begrüßt er auf Deutsch und fährt auf Englisch fort: »This is wonderful. « Erstmals in Deggendorf, verrät er, dass Bayern sein liebster Platz in Europa sei, und ergänzt die Aussage mit einem schelmisch-zweideutigen »many sweet memories«. Viele schöne Erinnerungen werden auch beim Publikum wach, vom Papa mit dem Kind auf den Schultern, bis zu den Eltern mit dem Kinderwagen, Teenager und ergraute Senioren oder ein Dingolfinger mit wallenden Haaren und einem flatternden Rolling-Stones-Hemd. Es sei ihm nicht darum gegangen Hits zu schreiben, sondern sich durch seine Musik auszudrücken, gibt Roger Hodgson zu verstehen. Eine Anmerkung, der die Deggendorfer Beifall zollen. Weiter fordert die 59-jährige Supertramp-Legende auf, »zu klatschen und mit mir zu singen«. Die Deggendorfer sind verhalten, reißen dann aber doch die Arme hoch und spenden »einen »Applaus für die Radler«. Die Atmosphäre könnte zwei Stunden lang nicht schöner sein; die mit Palmen bestückte Bühne, anfangs in Türkis getaucht, mit gezielt gesetzten Lichteffekten, der laue Sommerabend mit »Supertramp«-Klassikern wie »Give a little bit«, »Take the long way to home«, aber auch »Along came Mary«, »Easy does it« oder Hide in your shell«. Viele im Publikum klatschen oder summen mit, andere genießen nur die Stimmung: Musik, die Emotionen wachruft und Gänsehaut erzeugt. Ein Gag, als Hodgson plötzlich eine Kamera zückt und witzelt »I take a picture of you« (ich mache ein Bild von euch) - auch angesichts von Fotografen, die sich vorne an der Bühne drängen. Nach 16 Titeln, darunter auch das wunderbar melodiöse »Soap Box Opera« mit Saxofon und Keyboard-Begleitung, »Sister Moonshine«, »Dreamer«, oder »The logical Song« bis hin zu »Dont' leave me now«, war's so weit: Mit den beiden Zugaben »School« und »It's raining again«, entschwand Hodgson und hinterließ ein fasziniertes Publikum, das stimmungsmäßig erst gegen Ende langsam in Fahrt gekommen war. In Fahrt kamen die 1200 Radler erst wieder am nächsten Tag, nach einer kurzen Nacht in den Matratzenlagern in den Turnhallen der beiden Gymnasien und bei der Bundespolizei. There are songs that remain timeless. “Breakfast in America” is such a song and the same named album of Supertramp, an English band, which was founded in 1969, has been released in 1979. And so 2009 has become a real anniversary year. 1200 cyclists arrived in the Danube-Town on Friday and in the evening Roger Hodgson – the voice of Supertramp – performed at the Ackerloh at the BR’s invitation. “What a frenzy, it’s fascinating!” said a couple, as Roger Hodgson cantillates at the piano the first chords of “Lovers in the wind”, a song from his first solo album “In the Eye of the Storm”. Together with Aaron McDonald, Hodgson succeeded to create a club atmosphere, although there were 2500 people. On the one hand that’s because of the lyrical and quiet songs which are backed by guitar, keyboard and piano and on the other hand because of Hodgson’s casual remarks between the songs. “Guten Abend” he welcomes the audience in German and continues in English “This is wonderful”. Being the first time in Deggendorf, he revealed that Bavaria is his favourite place in Europe and completes his statement waggishly and ambiguously with “many sweet memories”. Many sweet memories also awake in some of the attendees: there’s a dad with his son on his shoulders, there are parents with a buggy, teenagers, grey-haired seniors and a man from Dingolfing who has flowing hair and wears a Rolling Stones shirt. It was not his issue to produce hits, but to express himself through his music, indicates Roger Hodgson. The audience acclaims him for that statement. Further, the 59-year-old Supertramp legend invites to “clap and to sing with me”. The people in Deggendorf behaved restrained at the beginning, but later on they rose up their arms and applauded. The atmosphere hardly could have been better: the stage decorated with palm trees, aflamed in a turquoise light, with pointedly light effects, a mild summer’s eve with Supertramp classic hits like “Give a little bit”, “Take the long way home”, “Along came Mary”, “Easy does it” or “Hide in your shell”. There are many in the audience who are clapping or humming, others just enjoy the atmosphere: That is music that evokes emotions and causes goose bumps. Hodgson made a gag considering the many photographers who clustered in front of the stage, when he suddenly whipped out a camera and said: “I take a picture of you”. After 16 songs, including the wonderful melodic “Soap Box Opera” backed with saxophone, “Sister Moonshine”, “Dreamer”, “The Logical Song”, and the two encores “School” and “It’s raining again”, Hodgson disappeared from the stage and left behind an enamoured audience, which moved into gear towards the end of the concert. |
