Hanau, Germany ~ September 13, 2012 ~ Reflection by Dieter Burkard and Doris Nell

A fresh and warm show
Review by Dieter Burkard and Doris Nell

The last concert in Germany for this year was in Hanau, close to Frankfurt am Main. The old songs, Roger wrote for Supertramp and for himself, still sounded fresh and the reason for that was not the cold weather. The reason is the high quality of the songs and the brilliant musicians.

But let's start from the beginning: Linda and Shakti invited my sister and me to come to the sound check a few days ago. We arrived at 5:15 PM in the open air venue in Hanau, close to the river Main. Approximately 20 people were in the amphitheater, waiting for the sound check. The setup of the stage was already completed. There was a bit time to talk with Linda and more time to talk with Howard. Aaron was cleaning his instruments with wet tissues and then Roger came on stage, waved his hand and said hello to the small group of people, sitting on the floor and started playing. Everything was so "normal" like in a family, although one of the world's greatest singers and song writers has entered the room. Roger and Aaron performed "Say goodbye" from the album "Open the door" and a few other songs to test the instruments, microphones and the audio mix.

The show stated at 8:00 PM with "Take the long way home". Roger explained, that the show started 30 minutes later, because he had to take a shower. Right from the beginning, the atmosphere was really great. Roger and Aaron made even more jokes than they usually do and the audience was in good shape. Whistling for "Easy does it" worked perfect. One could think, that there was a rehearsal for whistling prior to the show, but I can tell you: no, there wasn't one!

Even the special rhythm of clapping for "Don't leave me now" worked perfect until the song faded out. Aaron didn't have to instruct the audience to make it right. It simply worked! The whole show was amazing.

Other songs on the setlist were "Breakfast in America", "A soapbox opera", "Child of vision", "Lord is it mine", "Fool's overture", "Dreamer" and all the other great hits, the audience wanted to listen to.

The concert in Hanau wasn't a show with a band like most of the other shows this year. Since Roger and Aaron had to play all the instruments alone, this probably helped to compensate the low temperature, which went down to 13 degrees Celsius during the show. Roger and Aaron gave warm feelings to the audience and the audience supported the two musicians with singing along and clapping. We all had a lot of fun and left the venue cold outside, but warm inside.

We are looking forward to see Roger and Aaron again in Germany next year, with or without a band.
