Rosenheim, Germany ~ July 19, 2012 ~ Reflection by Bardo Metzger

Who needs Supertramp as long as Roger Hodgson is on tour?

Although it was a nice day in Bavaria, just a few hours before the concert the clouds were busting and when the opening act, Smart Alec, a rock band from Austria, had their soundcheck, the rain was coming down. At the end of the soundcheck all early birds were wet to the bones. But as it was warm that day it didn’t matter.

When Roger and his band entered the stage everyone was dry again, and, oh wonder, it didn’t start raining again. Roger promised to play his famous song "It’s Raining Again” not before the end of the show.

The place was full of happy people. The security desperately tried to keep the people on their seats but after Roger said that he really enjoys people singing with him almost everyone was beginning to clap, to dance, to sing, to whistle. When he began to play "Breakfast In America” many of them left their seats and went to the stage to be near to Roger. It was impressive. A guy next to me who must have been born in the year Roger left Supertramp was almost ecstatic during "Hide In Your Shell”.

I had my daughter with me because we were on holidays in Bavaria and I asked her if she likes Rogers songs. When she said "No!” I was shocked and I asked her why. So she told me that there are so many catchy tunes in Rogers songs. She’d need weeks to get them out of her head. I was greatly relieved. What bigger compliment could an artist get?

Besides the classics everyone knows Roger also played "Death And A Zoo” from his last studio album. It seemed like a classic to me because I heard it so many times now. From show to show it is becoming harder to divide the old Supertramp classics from the new classics.

At the end of this fantastic concert Roger said: "I think it is safe now!” and began to play "It’s Raining Again”. Everyone was singing along. Although I stood only a few meters away from Roger I almost wasn’t able to hear him singing. All around me happy people, brought back to the days of their youth with Rogers fantastic tunes.
Thank you very much, Roger, for all you are giving. It is really not just a little bit.
