Barcelona, Spain ~ August 2, 2010 ~ Linda Gianotti

Oh, what a venue.   Set between a centuries old monastery on one side of the stage and the beautiful waters off the coast of Spain on the other, I was eagerly awaiting Rogerís concert that was to come tonight.   However, Mother Nature had other plans.  Earlier in the day there had been a brief shower but the skies quickly cleared.    Weather at sound check was fine and then shortly before show time, the clouds started getting darker.   There was not a drop of rain falling so I was wishfully thinking that all would be fine.   Literally ten minutes before show time, the clouds opened.   It wasnít just a downpour; lightening was all around too.

But people did not leave.  Everyone took cover but a little downpour and lightening were not going to keep people from seeing Roger.   Rain ponchos were distributed and we were all hoping for the best.  Finally, when the rain started to greatly subside, we thought the show would start.   However, it was not to be.   About five minutes later, the heavy rain started again.   Out of safety concerns, and rightfully so, a decision was made to postpone the show.   People were disappointed, of course, but they understood.

Roger went out on stage and told the audience that he had very much wanted to play and that he would make every effort to reschedule the show.  He said he knows that many people had travelled long distances and he understood the disappointment.

Then what happened next strengthened my opinion about not only what kind of artist Roger is, but what kind of man he is.   Someone held up something for Roger to sign.   He said "Sure I will sign things.  Itís the least I can do.Ē   He sat at the edge of the stage for no fewer than 45 minutes talking to people, letting them take his photo, signing any slip of paper that could be passed his way, and just being in the moment with his fans.   What a kind soul he is to take the time to do that.   And what a memory people will come away with.   We may not have been able to see Roger Hodgson perform in concert tonight but what we got is much more valuable.   We got to see the smiles of joy on so many faces as people were able to get close to the man that many thought they would only see from afar.

After being disappointed that I might miss my chance of seeing him perform -- at least if the concert is not rescheduled soon -- I can only confirm Linda's words as one of the people who got to talk to Roger for a while yesterday night. I had been waiting for this concert with great anticipation, and sure I'm sad that he could not play for us, but I will always remember how genuinely kind and patient he was.

Since I live in the United States and I speak English fluently, I helped him spell a few Catalan names and translated what some of the people addressing him were saying. When I was ready for him to sign my program and leave room for other people, Roger said: "No, you stay here! You need to keep translating for me." So I gladly stayed a little longer and enjoyed the moment while serving as Roger's unofficial translator. The fact that he signed my program "For Uri, my translator" made my day.

It was a deep shame. I started the countdown for the concert when I bought the tickets, two months ago. His songs are, out of doubt, the most listened songs in my life and hearing them in a life concert was a dream couldnít come true, but I will try to see him wherever it goes.

Hello Linda! I was there but there is no pity at all. Roger was fantastic with their fans. He couldn't sing but at least he signed my book and this is a great thing for me! I'll be waiting next concert...dreaming with his songs. Best regards!
