I can say that up until this concert of Roger’s in Madrid, I had never been to a venue that is located on land with such a rich
history. The outdoor venue sits on what
were formally the hunting grounds for the Kings of Spain, with the Royal Palace
in full view from the stage. I found
the setting to be quite fitting. Royal
grounds for our grandeur lyricist and composer, Roger Hodgson.
As soon as the doors opened, it seemed as if all of Madrid was entering - people of all ages. Plus, it was so nice to see so many families. Everyone was in such a jovial mood and waiting for what was sure to be a most memorable night. What had started as a very warm day turned into a cool evening with a strong breeze.
Roger came on stage at the precise starting
time. Everyone jumped to their feet and
went wild with applause. The wonderful
welcome went on for several minutes. He
stood on the stage with a beautiful smile just soaking in the love being sent
his way.
Soon Roger sat at his keyboard and the opening notes
of Take the Long Way Home could be heard.
While under the lights from the Palace, everyone was dancing, singing,
and having the time of their lives. Every
song was performed with effortlessness and perfection. Roger’s voice soared from the stage.
As always, it was such a joy to see Roger perform
his "babies” such as Dreamer, The Logical Song, Breakfast in America, and Hide
in your Shell, to name a few. After the
second standing ovation I started counting them and throughout the concert
there were a total of five. This got me
wondering how many artists have come even close to five standing ovations
during their shows. I would bet not
many.
Two songs that are not often performed, Know Who You
Are and Say Goodbye, were so wonderful to hear.
After the brilliant Fool’s Overture, Roger said his goodbyes and left
the stage. The audience very quickly
made it clear that they wanted Roger back.
He didn’t keep us waiting long. Once
again, School got everyone on their feet.
It was so great to see people dancing and truly enjoying
themselves.
The last song of the evening, It’s Raining Again,
was met with a burst of applause. There
was one couple who could not contain themselves and were literally dancing up
and down the aisle. What a night had by all. Roger thanked his audience and said he hopes
to come back soon. His return will not
come soon enough.
